A New Beginning at In The Country!
Winter is usually a time for us to regroup and take a bit of a breather, but not this past winter! As many of you know, In The Country has relocated over the winter. We are now located on W35 (Quasqueton Diagonal Blvd.), just two miles from our previous location. Our new location will be more convenient for you and easier to find. Bigger greenhouse, bigger gift shop, bigger outdoor shadehouse...we are very excited about what this move means for our future. 2012 is our 15th year in business, thanks to you. We hope you’ll stop out to see our new place and celebrate a new beginning of many years to come!
This is Hosta Country!
Everyone wants to know what's new and hot, and the one new hosta that stands out from the crowd this year is Hosta 'Wheee!' Its heavy, green leaves are circled with big, loose, creamy-white ruffles that will have you squealing with excitement! Truly distinct and attention grabbing, this vigorous grower will be on every gardener's must-have list.
Other notable new hostas for 2012 include one that has captivated the imagination of many hosta fanatics for years. Hosta 'Atom Smasher', with its long, rippled, yellow leaves and spiky mound shape, is finally available to all. Another fun, new miniature is Hosta 'Sparkler', with long, narrow, deep green leaves with a thin, white stripe down the center.
Not all hostas are both beautiful and great garden plants, but Hosta 'Cranberry Wine' has it all! Glossy, gold leaves have wonderfully ruffled edges and dark red petioles and flower scapes. It looks flawless all season and is a strong grower. Quickly becoming one of our favorites!
If you are after something truly unusual, Hosta ‘Moulin Rouge’ will catch your eye. Dark green, wavy leaves have a milky-green center with a stark white border separating the two. Similar, but even more distinguished than the pattern in 'Striptease'. A leaf within a leaf!
Die-hard hosta collectors and hybridizers will find several streaked hostas in our line up for 2012. From giants, like Hosta 'Justice' and Hosta 'Dream Maker', to the small and compact Hosta 'Special Forces'. From the stunning blue and gold Hosta 'Powder Keg' to the unusual gold and cream Hosta 'Urban Cowboy'. Or maybe the ruffled Hosta 'Sir Richard' is more your style. Any of these beauties will spice up your garden with their wild streaks and splashes.

Hosta of the Year – 'Liberty'
When anyone asks me what my favorite hosta is, ‘Liberty’ is always near the top of my list! It stopped everyone in their tracks when hostaholics got the first glimpse of this plant at the 2000 American Hosta Society Convention in Minnesota!! The first wide margined sport of ‘Sagae’ to hit the market and arguably the best. Hosta 'Liberty' has the same, broad, undulating, gray-green leaves of its parent, but with a very wide edge that starts out rich, butter-yellow and fades to creamy-white. It takes two to three years to develop the wide margin, but 'Liberty' forms a stunning, vase-shaped mound about 28" tall and 40" across that is topped with pale lavender flowers in mid summer. A mature specimen is positively drool-worthy and no shade garden is complete without one!
Perennials
As in the past, most of our perennial selections are geared toward the shade garden. Ligularia ‘Bottle Rocket’ forms a bold, but compact clump of large, leathery, deep green leaves with strongly toothed margins. Spikes of mustard yellow flowers stand just above the foliage in mid summer. Rodgersia 'Bronze Peacock' is another bold perennial with large, bronze leaves that make an excellent background for smaller, more finely textured shade plants. Summer brings a tall spike of frothy flowers, similar to a giant astilbe flower. Of course, we couldn’t pass up a few new Coralbells! Heuchera 'Delta Dawn' is a vibrant blend of yellow and pastel orange and Heucherella 'Sunrise Falls' is the newest of the trailing “Falls” series, with dissected gold leaves with red central markings.
For you sunny gardeners, we are happy to be growing three new Baptisias (False Indigo) from the “Decadence” series. These hybrids were developed in Minnesota and selected for their unique flower colors and compact growing habit. ‘Blueberry Sundae’ (deep indigo blue) ‘Dutch Chocolate’ (velvety chocolate brown), and ‘Lemon Meringue’ (vivid lemon yellow) make care-free, long lived plants that bloom in late spring. True blue flowers are a rare treat, but the flowers of Gentiana ‘Blue Cross’ are as blue as blue gets! This compact, drought tolerant gem blooms along its 10” stems in late summer and early fall.
Water Gardening
It has been a while since we have been so excited about a new water lily! Waterlily ‘Wanvisa’ was awarded the Best New Waterlily by the International Waterlily & Water Garden Society in 2010. The shocking orange/pink flowers represent a never-before-seen color in waterlilies and are speckled with creamy yellow. Wild! The pads create a nice backdrop of deep green with chocolate marbling. The best part is, this amazing waterlily is winter hardy!

Succulents
Do we have some stunning plants for you fellow succulent lovers! The new Flapjack plant called ‘Fantastic’ will knock your socks off. Each pancake sized leaf is circled by cream and fire engine red. Aeonium ‘Sunburst’ will be a real thriller in your succulent combos with its strikingly variegated, saucer-sized rosettes! Succulents are so easy and forgiving, we think they are ideal plants for memorial planters. They will dress up your loved one’s headstone all summer long, with little worry about frequent watering!
