Hyper-Tufa Trough Workshop
Join us as Trough and Conifer expert Gary Whittenbaugh leads us step-by-step through a hands-on workshop on making hyper-tufa troughs. These fascinating stone-like planters are perfect for creating a miniature landscape of alpine plants, rocks, and dwarf conifers.
Cost is $15 per person. We will supply the hyper-tufa mixture and the mold. You will need to bring a sturdy, 2' x 2' board to form your trough on.

Hyper-Tufa Trough Planting Workshop
Gary will join us once again for a hands-on workshop on planting and landscaping hyper-tufa troughs. This workshop is open to anyone who has a trough that needs to be planted. We will have a variety of suitable plants for you to choose from and will provide the special potting mix for the trough.

Gary Whittenbaugh retired president and former co owner of Service Center Inc. Oelwein. Has been gardening for over 30 years with emphasis on dwarf, slow growing and unusual conifers for the past 15 years. Currently president of the American Conifer Society Central Region, on the board of directors and state representative of Iowa for the American Conifer Society. He is an Iowa Master Gardener and on the advisory board of the Iowa Master Gardeners and Roots Board Member of The Bickelhaupt Arboretum. In addition to being a member of the American Conifer Society he is a member of the North American Rock Garden Society.
Has taught classes to many groups on Hypertufa trough making and trough gardening including Vander Veer Botanical Park Davenport, IA, The Conifer Society National meeting Ann Arbor, Michigan, Quad City Botanical Center Rock Island, Illinois, The Bickelhaupt Arboretum Clinton IA, and The Iowa Arboretum Madrid IA.
Their small garden in Oelwein IA (brother Tom helps) of conifers, companion plants and many trough gardens host many visitors every year. The garden received the first place award for the best landscape given by the Oelwein area Chamber of Commerce and several photos of the garden have appeared in Garden Gate Magazine.
