Abbreviation: Ctsm

The genus Catasetums is made up of 80 to 120 epiphytic species which come from tropical areas of South and Central America.

Culture

Light

Catasetums are not picky about light intensity. They will grow well in 1/4 to 3/4 sun. Bright light will give less attractive female flowers, and lower light will give more attractive male flowers.

Temperature

These plants grow best in high temperatures. 80*-100* F. during the day and 60*-65* F. at night is ideal. During the winter rest, 55* F. at night and 70*-80* F. during the day is best.

Water

During the growing season, these plants need lots of water. After new growth is mature, gradually reduce waterings until the leaves yellow and fall off. Give no more water until new growth begins in the spring.

Fertilizer

Catasetums need heavy fertilizing to grow and bloom well. 1/4 to 1/2 strength fertilizer with every or every other watering is fine. Slow release fertilizer is also good, and can be used in addition to water soluble fertilizer to produce large plants.

Blooming

The waxy, fragrant flowers can be either male or female depending on the growing conditions. Female flowers are produced with high light, low moisture conditions, but aren't as showy as male flowers. Male flowers are produced with low light, high moisture conditions. The pollinia of the male flowers are fired out when the sensitive triggers are touched.

Other Notes

The old back bulbs can be separated and potted up to produce new plants. First and second year old growth will have the best success rate. After three or four years, the old back bulbs will shrivel up and die.
