Spring is always a welcome relief after the long winter months, but it will be especially welcome this year. After several years of mild winters with very little snow, I guess Mother Nature thought it was time for a reality check. Everyone I know is tired of winter. The -20* temperatures, howling winds, endless days with no sun, ice, and record-breaking snow has taken a toll on everyone - especially us gardeners!
On Saturday, February 23 I spoke at the Northeast Iowa Horticulture Chautauqua V in New Hampton. Other than some fog in the morning, it was a great day to get out and about - lots of sun and temperatures around 30*. It was a fun day that helped raise the spirits of the 100+ gardeners in attendance. About 25 people attended my presentation on hostas. Everyone was very enthusiastic, which made the time even more enjoyable. It was great to catch up with old and new friends. After a day full of seminars and lots of garden talk, I think everyone returned home with a bad case of spring fever! It looks like we may get a break in the weather now that March is here. At the very least, there is light at the end of the long, snowy tunnel. In just a couple weeks, all our attention will turn to the greenhouse. Plants will start arriving on a weekly basis for the next month and a half. We have lots of new plants that we are excited to share with you, when spring finally does get here. In addition to more than 50 new hostas, you can check our online store for a preview of the amazing new Heucheras we’ll have.
Be watching for an announcement about our Spring in the Country Open House in the next couple weeks. We’re also making plans for our second annual Hosta & Dessert Social. We’ve got a couple new ideas in the works and are hoping for an even bigger turn out than last year!Hang in there…spring is coming!
