Tuesday, July 11, 2006 ~ Our Town, Our Garden

Another month has flown by and now that it is July, that means summer is nearly half over. June was a little slower than the month of May, but still brought some exciting news!

A couple weeks ago, the KCRG news came to film the garden and interview us. They are going to feature our business when they do the “Our Town” special on Independence the week of July 17. We only had a week notice, so we were in a mad weeding and mulching frenzy that week! Thank goodness we have great family and friends to lend their extra hands to help get a lot accomplished. The garden looks really great! We’ll see how we turn out on TV. When we find out the exact date our clip will air, we’ll let everyone know.

We are once again going to have fresh Missouri peaches available. They will be ready sometime after July 17th. We will likely send out an email when we get them, but we can only bring back so many lugs. Feel free to reserve your’s now!

The water lilies will be at their peak before long. Everyone is welcome to stop out just to see the rainbow of colors. Speaking of water lilies, the tropicals have had several weeks to re-establish themselves. They are looking good…and also looking for new ponds to call home! We also have a couple Victoria water lilies available.

Last, but not least, please note that we will be closed July 13-16. We will be in Milwaukee for the Midwest Regional Hosta Convention. It should be fun…lots of friends to see and of course tons of plants and gardens to see. Once we return, I will post an update about the convention along with pictures!

Part of the thrill of gardening is searching out and growing new plants. One of my favorites this year is the Japanese Striped Maize. Just a fancy name for variegated corn! It took a while to develop the variegation, but now that it is nearing 4-5 feet tall, it is really showy with the green, white, and red striped leaves!

We got a couple of inches of much needed rain today and now the summer heat is really supposed to set it. Stay cool!
