If there is royalty among shade plants, it would have to be the hostas. With the endless variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, it’s easy to see why hostas are the #1 selling perennial in America.
The coming year looks to be exciting for Hosta growers with several much sought after new Hosta introductions finally coming on the market. Both 'Clovelly' and 'Arctic Blast' will appeal to those who adore ruffles. Hosta 'Clovelly' stands proud with rounded and dimpled, horizontally held green leaves and Hosta 'Arctic Blast' makes an upright mound of cool, frosty blue leaves that come to a twisted point. Both feature a heavily ruffled leaf margin.
Hosta 'Adrian's Glory' is a new introduction from the 'Gold Standard' family. It forms a stunning clump of bluish-green leaves with a narrow gold center.
The star Hosta of 2008 is 'Stitch in Time'. This Hosta was debuted in limited numbers last year and it instantly became the talk of the Hosta world! We are excited to be able to offer Hosta ‘Stitch in Time’ in 2008. The narrow green leaf centers, wide gold margins, and unique "stitched" texture make this a must have Hosta.
Hostas are about as carefree as a plant can be, but a little extra TLC will help your new plants off to a good start. Select a site that gets bright light or even morning sun. Hostas like shade during the hot part of the day, but they won’t thrive in the dark. When preparing the planting site, add lots of organic matter like compost and/or well-rotted manure. Hostas will survive in hard clay, but a loose, moist bed will let them grow to their full potential. If you want to fertilize your hostas, apply a balanced, granular fertilizer in the spring before the leaves unfurl. Slow release types work well, too. What hostas like even more than fertilizer, though, is plain ol’ water. Hostas can withstand periodic dryness once established, but will grow much faster and larger if you keep them constantly moist (not soggy!).
At In The Country Garden & Gifts we try to cater to the seasoned collectors as well as those new to growing hostas. If you are looking for something not on our list, let us know. If we don’t have what you want, we may be able to get it for you.
About Our Plants - We do not baby our plants! The majority of our hostas are grown directly in the ground. All of the plants listed have been grown a minimum of one growing season unless otherwise marked and many of them are mature divisions. We don't grow large quantities of any single variety and with our local sales, there may be occasions when our online catalog may not be 100% accurate regarding availability. Weather and other factors beyond our control also play a roll. Should we not be able to supply an ordered plant, we will refund the cost of the plant or allow you to pick a substitute of equal value.
- More new Hostas will be added periodically through the season, so be sure to check back! If you would like to be notified when new Hostas become available, register and sign up to receive our newsletter.
- Please take a moment to read our Ordering & Shipping information before ordering.
